Local Politics - Election Tuesday, May 20, 2014

We enthusiastically support and endorse Commissioner Harry Johnston and Chairman Buzz Ahrens in their reelection efforts next month.

Harry and Buzz have always looked out for the best interests of Hickory Flat and Cherokee County residents, and they absolutely deserve to be returned to office.  Cherokee County is among the best managed counties in Georgia in no small part to the financial and leadership skills of these two men.  In almost every metric, our county stands out among Georgia counties.  Let's keep a GREAT thing going!

Please review the candidates and offices and be sure to place your vote Tuesday, May 20, 2014.

Well, their advertising implies a move from the political left to the center. Let's just say that much pavement remains before they approach something balanced.

Schools & Education

Replacement Middle School - Dean Rusk

You may have noticed the missing trees across from Goodwill.  This is the location of the replacement Dean Rusk Middle School and I'm told the old building will be used for a freshman academy feeding into Sequoyah.  (This may make sense, but what a depressing way to start high school!)

Hickory Flat residents would rightly ask how the school district plans to use this construction to alleviate the crippling traffic congestion when school starts and stops at SHS and DRMS.  Bill Sebring, Assistant Superintendant of support services and facilities/construction was kind enough to reply to my question via e-mail and said this:

Our goal is to alleviate a portion of the gridlock you mentioned by allowing buses and other traffic to move throughout the 3 school complex without having to access Hickory to traverse to another school.  One of the goals of the traffic flow is to avoid the traffic light at East Cherokee and Hickory.  Our goal has always been to relieve the traffic pressure in that area, along with providing a first class educational facility.  While this project will not entirely solve the traffic problems, we have engineered the project to reduce the traffic impact in the area.

There is no doubt that providing a way for the busses to move between DRMS and SHS to pick up students without using Hickory Road will save tens of thousands of hours of wasted time each year by the commuters using Hickory Road every day.  We appreciate and commend this project.

Hickory Flat Schools

The traditional heart of the Hickory Flat community is the Hickory Flat 'triangle' bordered by Highway 140, Hickory Road and East Cherokee Drive. Until the late 1990s this area included a gas station, restaurant, veterinarian, library and little else. This area now supports well over 50 businesses including two shopping centers anchored by a Kroger and a Publix.

Immediately bordering the 'triangle' are Hickory Flat Elementary, Dean Rusk Middle and Sequoyah High, with Mountain Road Elementary serving the southern portion of the Hickory Flat community and feeding into the middle and high schools.

The growth in population necessitated splitting these districts, so Avery Elementary, Creekland Middle and Creekview High serve the northeastern portion of Hickory Flat and are also listed here.
